In various outdoor locations, a cry is performed. As the locations differ – under trees, in a rough wooden structure, in a field – the distance of the performer from the camera also differs, altering the volume and proximity of the sound. The performer also varies the vocal qualities of the cry, including its length, tone, pitch and volume. Sometimes piercing, sometimes falling away, the cry sounds eerie and dehumanised. The huge range and variation of cries removes the meaning - what is the cry intended to convey to the witness? There is no apparent stimulus, nor any desired response. A cry is in essence a means to alert others of distress – which others are alerted here?
