Lili Dujourie, Passion de l'été pour l'hiver (1983)
In Passion de l’été pour l’hiver (1981), we see Lili Dujourie in a quiet room, leaning against the wall or gazing out the window. Filmed in a single take in Ostend, the work is monochrome and stripped of any technical flourish. Its simplicity is deliberate — every gesture, posture and pause becomes meaningful.
Unlike her other works, she does not move on or off camera, but seems caught within the gaze. Here, Dujourie explores the stillness between presence and absence, between desire and distance. The title evokes longing for what cannot be reached, while the camera captures a body that refuses spectacle yet radiates autonomy and quiet intensity.
Lili Dujourie (°1941, Roeselare) is considered to be a pioneer of video art in Belgium. Created at a time when video was gaining new artistic ground, this work reflects her subtle but radical use of the medium — thoughtful, restrained, and deeply human.
