20/20 Vision is our monthly micro-cinema night at argos: a shifting line-up of moving images and video works, from shorts to features, from the archive and beyond. With only 20 chairs for 20 spectators, we gather around for a programme shaped around a topic or a filmmaker. We open the bar, ladle out hot soup, and invite you to sink into a collective viewing experience. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes provocative, always a little unexpected. The programme is designed to spark conversations or maybe even disagreements.

Seats are limited, so come early; spots and soup are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. The bar and ticket office open at 18:00. The screenings start at 18:30.

The emotional struggles of men passed down from generation to generation are here observed through the queer and feminist lenses of three films, spanning from the 90s through today. The internal battles of the characters reveal discrepancies, conflicting masculinities and a distressing solitude. Without absolving them of their resulting actions, these three filmmakers place their varying needs for intimacy, expressed through a wide array of cultural markers and practices such as medieval literature, rap music, the use of drugs and alcohol or extreme violence, within a framework of an increasingly disconnected society.

Alison Murray, Wank Stallions (1993)
UK, 33 min
English spoken, English subtitles

Wank Stallions follows two young men as they move through the English club scene of the 1990s on the coast of Brighton. They bump into various archetypes of masculinity, abandoning themselves to a transformational choreography fueled by drugs and alcohol.

Murray’s early films (Wank Stallions, Kissy Suzuki Suck and Pantyhead a.o.) were radical in their dissection of stereotypical representations and were extensively distributed by argos in the early nineties. Wank Stallions, which copiously quotes English poet A.A. Milne, American journalist Hunter S. Thompson and hip-hop band Urban Species, has been subtitled on the occasion of this screening.

In 2018, an incel (involuntary celibate) posted a suicide note on Reddit entitled "America is responsible for my death". “The Mechanics of Fluids” is an attempt to find answers to his words, a virtual drift through the Internet in search of his digital traces that ends up being an inner journey between two connected solitudes.

La Mécanique des fluides was recently added to our distribution catalogue.

This screening was featured in Le Mois Du Doc, an initiative that promotes French-language Belgian documentary filmmaking through the support of film screenings in various locations in Brussels and Wallonia. Signal GPS perdu by Pierre Voland is produced and distributed by Atelier Graphoui and the film is part of the moisdudoc.be catalog.

In collaboration with kortfilm.be, an essay will be published on each of the subjects of the 20/20 Vision screenings this fall and winter. You can find the essay for this specific edition here.
