The youyou (French) or zaghareet (Arabic) is a yodelling cry of joy. It is a shrill, trilling sound, used mostly by women to express intense emotions like joy. Ululation is practised in various parts of the world, from the Middle East to Turtle Island, from the Basque country to Central and South Asia. The film Le Cadeau by Myriam Van Imschoot weaves together the stories and experiences of four women whose portraits evoke both tradition and transmission, personal memories and shared cultural practices.
