Young people sit on a park bench in Brussels, studying a printout listing 8,000 objects collected during a colonial expedition to northeastern Congo between 1911 and 1913. On a smartphone screen, images flicker to life: the oldest surviving film footage of the Congo, shot by Belgian military attaché Armand Hutereau. The contemporary witnesses carry history into the present through their gaze and dialogue. Their own reality intertwines with the past, along with the many ways it has been recorded, interpreted, and contested.
